❖ Hair Trends
Never in a million years did I think I would be writing this, but according to an analysis of Amazon data, I'm not alone.
Racked has shared that women aged 42 to 60 are the fastest-growing market for beauty products, with the greatest percentage of them buying a second hair care product than any other age group.
But what do you need to buy if you're over the age of 40?
It's no secret that menopause can wreak havoc on your hormones, as well as age your hair and body. With this in mind, here are some of the best beauty tips for women over 40, based on my own experience with talking to all kinds of women about their hair and beauty products.
❖ Your Goals
Goals are one of the most important parts of life, which means what do you want to achieve? Do you want to look great, but also be comfortable and feel good in your skin? When you understand yourself, you can show who you are. Go for something fresh and modern. Perfect for summer. Have an eye for style, you will always be pleased. You don't have to follow someone else, just look around and use your instincts. Believe in yourself. There is no style code, everybody has different ideas. Look out for cutoffs or midi skirts, or asymmetrical cuts, or just keep things simple. Put on high heels once a year.
❖ Considerations
Nothing makes an older woman appear older than her hair: if it’s too big, too straight, or too short, she looks old. But a shortcut or one with an uneven texture often makes her look younger. Brush and condition your hair regularly to keep it healthy. And while a full-on brush-out might work for younger women, for women over 40, it’s more likely to make your hair look worse. If you want to ditch your ponytail, but also want to avoid the dreaded mullet, opt for a simple low bun or a very few braids. Consider your face shape, too. Gently sweep the bangs to frame your face. But if your face is rounder at the bottom, like Marilyn Monroe’s, curly hair would accentuate the roundness, while a round face would flatter the slimmer, angular face.
❖ Style Guide
You are probably well acquainted with the timeless hairstyles for over 40 and overweight is known as the '70s-era ‘do. Our new-age obsessions, however, are 2018, what with microbraids, hair wraps, fishtails, updos, and feathery bobs, and whatever other new-age-y thing might be trending. With the Internet melting down over an inscrutable-to-begin-with Kardashian bob, this is a golden opportunity to zero in on whatever permutation of the '70s ‘do your heart desires.
Practical Tips
- Shampoo daily for healthy, shiny hair. Don't layer conditioners, either. The thin oils from each one will cause your scalp to produce excess oil, which can clog your hair.
- Have a colorist color your hair.
❖ Hairstyles for Over 40 Women
If you’re over 40, there’s a good chance that your idea of style is still fairly girly: lots of eyeliner and eyelash curlers. But the pressure to wear one style of lipstick, one style of hairstyle, and one manicure for the rest of your life isn’t realistic. Fortunately, women over 40 (especially women with short hair) have lots of options when it comes to style. Here are ten tips on how to find your perfect style for your age and shape:
Get a realistic haircut
My mother has perfect hair, so I’m always afraid of doing something drastic with my short hair. It’s easier to take some style tips from someone who has long hair. Mom gets her hair cut about every two to three months and seems to be able to easily pull off shorter styles. Plus, you’re sure to get great advice.

This version of the classic undone beach wave hairstyle is a sophisticated take on the classic sleek, pulled-back style.
❖ Straight Hairstyles
Surprisingly, this is one of the easier pieces of hair advice to learn. After all, it is pretty obvious that the bobs and voluminous layers you try on the front of your hair will look best once they have been shaped.
If you have fine hair, have patience with your stylist as they will need to work extra hard to get the results you want. The best advice is to not go with the first style that your stylist gives you, go in with a few different ideas in mind. It may take a few trims to get there but you will thank yourself for it later.
Cutting Your Hair
Thinking about cutting your hair after a certain age? It’s a pretty self-explanatory piece of advice but if you have taken the time to trim your hair before, it’s always best to keep it up to date so that you avoid hair loss.
❖ Prom Hairstyles
Hi, my name is Aileen and I'm a 40-something-year-old professional. I'm trying to achieve a French look for my wedding. Can you share your style diary for the perfect French hairstyle? I want to look effortless. I want my hair to flow effortlessly when I do the twist. I also want the dress to drape nicely to the floor. French is the essence of elegance and refinement. When you walk down the aisle, make sure your hair and makeup are perfectly put together.
❖ Mature Udos
Nothing sums up the maturity of 40 better than statement updos. Too often, we get stuck in the thought that we have to follow the latest trend in hair. This is so not true and we are going to prove it to you.
A woman in her forties must define her style by ditching the harsh, often aging styles that women who are twenty years younger opt for and try something fresh and modern and will make her look her best.
Here are some new-age hairstyles and updos that look fabulous and will enhance your beauty even more.
Tousled Ponytails
Think of your favorite Disney character, Rapunzel. Becca Cosmetics knows that soft, cool, tousled ponytails are very on-trend this year. These are easy looks that will add a feminine touch to your look.
❖ Conclusion
In other words, what would your next step be? To get help in understanding how to look younger? No way.
There's a pretty good chance that getting younger looks would require the use of Botox. The Centers for Disease Control just reported that there's a “baby boomer” population boom. According to CDC, 55 million Americans are now in that population category.
What I mean is that older women (over 40) have evolved into having a different kind of hair and skincare routine than younger women (under 40). This is not a bad thing, however.
